In 1970, Agnes Cato had a vision to establish “a lighthouse for God in Woodbridge, VA”. The Woodbridge Seventh-day Adventist Church started simply with a branch Sabbath School program. Individuals living in Woodbridge began meeting on January 3, 1970, in an Episcopal Church with approximately 35 adults and children. This small group was officially recognized as a company with a charter membership of 22 members. With the new charter, members met and worshiped at the Covenant Presbyterian Church.
In 1973, the Woodbridge Company purchased two acres of land for $25,000 on Davis Ford Road, which we know today as Minnieville Road. The small membership was determined to build a church and pay off the debt through various fund-raising activities.
On April 12, 1975, under the leadership of Pastor John Robbins, the Woodbridge Seventh-day Adventist church was established with 41 members. On April 10, 1983, the church officially broke ground for the new church building. The church was completed and began meeting in the new building on December 1, 1984. When the church was officially dedicated on May 12, 1988, the entire debt was paid.
Our most recent former pastor was Maxwell Ferguson, PhD. He has been an ordained minister of the gospel for over 20 years, he earned his undergraduate degree from Oakwood College (now Oakwood University), a graduate degree from Andrews University, and his Doctor of Ministry degree in Practical Theology from Hartford International University. Pastor Ferguson has training in Clinical Pastoral Education and has served as a chaplain in hospital settings. Pastor Ferguson has been married to his wife Norma for more than 25 years and has three adult children, Norell, Nicholas, and Nelson.
We are currently working with the Potomac Conference for a new pastor.
About Seventh-day Adventists
As Seventh-day Adventists, we accept the Bible as our only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs based on the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. Our church has a worldwide membership of approximately 19 million members with more than one million members in North America. We believe there is one God of three coeternal Persons making up the God as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our name provides the basis for our belief. We believe, the seventh day, Saturday, is the Sabbath. We also believe Jesus will come again.
